Milan Travel Guide

Milan, Lombardy's jewel city in Northern Italy, is a stylish, sophisticated metropolis that blends the hip and new with over 2500 years of history. Milan is also a cultural hub that rivals London in terms of theatre and Paris in terms of fashion.

About Milan

Milan covers an area of 765.3 square miles (1982 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 3.7 million people being one of the largest cities in Italy. It is one of the main artistic centres in Europe and also an important fashion spot.

Teatro alla Scala

La Scala  Teatro alla Scala was built in 1776 as a replacement for the Teatro Ducale which had been destroyed by fire. Following further damage caused by bombings during WWII it was rebuilt and reopened for a second time in 1946.

The first performances of works by Verdi, Rossigni, Bellini, Boito, Donizetti and Puccini were held here. Now the renowned La Scala, with seating for around 3,000 distributed in the stalls, four tiers of boxes and two galleries, has become one of the foremost opera venues in the world and home to the celebrated La Scala di Milano opera company.
